Radio Dialogue.

The kind of emotional crux in the story is when the characters hear a radio transmission and realise the connection and admiration they hold for each other. I made it a point to never watch the animation with the original sound so at the time of editing this section I genuinely couldn’t remember what had been used for this scene. I initially wanted to use an actual clip of audio from the 50s to try and get that kind of trans-Atlantic dated feel but found it incredibly difficult to find something that fit the scene and had good enough audio-quality that I could easily edit it to fit with the rest of the animation. I then thought about maybe using something comedic to completely juxtapose what was actually happening in the scene but realised it felt too important of a moment.

I’d recently read an Albert Camus book and he had such a way of conveying emotion that I decided to use one of his quotes. Unfortunately, the only way to do this was by putting it through an AI speech generator ( For the record I’m very against using AI in art but I can’t deny its convenience here). I chose a generic American male voice as the scene was clearly set in Las Vegas and I felt that this voice was the most cohesive. Once I had the audio I cut both the high and low frequencies with an EQ, added quite a long reverb, then used distortion and a bitcrusher to create grain. All of this made a fairly believable radio effect.
