Going into this, I knew this animation would require me to gather lots of samples. Although it is quite fantastical, it’s heavily based on real life. There’s so many mundane events that happen throughout the short that at some points during the project I felt quite overwhelmed with how many sounds and samples I’d have to gather. I initially felt unsure of how to begin so the way I approached this was by splitting it into 5, 1-minute sections and watching those over and over again, writing down each and every sound I could think of needing. Once I had a list of all the samples I’d need, I began to look for them online. Throughout this project I mainly used FreeSounds, and as I went on I realised how specific I had to be when searching for a certain sample. For example, for any kind of quick movement the characters make, I decided I wanted a “Woosh” sound; but, there’s 1000s in the database, so I would have to think of the exact way to describe how I imagined the sound in my head. I found myself searching for things like “Medium-length high pitched Swoosh” and “Californian women laughing at the pool”. I think that gathering all the samples I needed was definitely the most time consuming part of this project.
